This course is designed to introduce and motivate an interest in a wide range of different forms of fiction. The central idea for the class will be that different fictional forms correspond to different ways of understanding the real world; because the word “fiction” derives from the Latin word for fashioning or making, we will suggest that fiction is a way of crafting alternative or other possible worlds. To this end we will consider not only traditional texts, but also some visual texts, unpacking what we mean by “literature,” “fiction,” as well as “great books.”
